Council of the Reiki Association

The composition of the Council of the Reiki Association usually changes each year as one or more members come to the end of their maximum allowed term on Council. Council members are normally elected at General Meetings held during gatherings and become directors of the company. Whilst reasonable expenses can be reimbursed, the positions themselves have no remuneration.
Council members are expected to attend in person several meetings each year. Locations for meetings are chosen by Council to best suit the majority of its members, and may last a couple of days thus requiring overnight stays. TRA business is otherwise dealt with by phone, sometimes including Skype, and much is done by email.

If you are interested in standing for Council these are the criteria:

  • be over 18 years of age
  • have been initiated into Reiki for a minimum of 2 years
  • at some point in time have been a member of TRA for at least 2 years
  • be initiated into Second Degree Reiki, or a Master
  • agree to abide by and actively support the Statement of Identity of The Reiki Association
  • have attended a previous TRA gathering
  • be prepared to make a short statement at the General Meeting outlining why they want the role and what they can offer to it
  • ensure circumstances do not exist which prevent directorship of a limited company

Georgina Hood - Council member

Georgina HoodFor me, joining the Reiki Association Council over the weekend of 17th/18th May had particular special meaning as it marked the first Anniversary of my Reiki Mastery with Anneli Twan in Canada last year. I first came to Reiki through my first Master Lizzie McCallum (who is one of Tripuri Dunn’s Masters). I live in London with my four children, three Burmese cats, two pugs and a tank of African fish.

As the Founder and Principal of Paint Pots Montessori Schools and Creative Classes, I have been offering infant programmes, creative workshops, Montessori education and parenting courses for children from birth to 11 years for over 25 years. I get great enjoyment from working with mothers and babies of 6 – 12 months and 12 – 18 months, offering them unique classes using treasure baskets, heuristic play and music, with guitar and voice.

Alongside this I deliver parenting classes with a focus on using creative development to empower parenting and enhance their understanding, knowledge, well-being and health. With Reiki, this flows into all areas of my practice and supports me to be both empathetic and practical when working with the parents.

In 2012 I founded Heart Montessori which is an International consultancy business. This grew out of the experience and knowledge that I gained over two decades of research and practice in Montessori settings. I hold regular workshops and training sessions in locations including Jordan and China. I am very excited about speaking at the Montessori Foundation’s Annual Conference "Peaceful Classrooms, Peaceful Children, Peaceful Schools” in Florida later this year.

At the moment I am writing a peace curriculum to embed mindfulness, yoga and kindness into the Montessori classroom as well as launching a wellness programme for my Montessori teachers which will include an opportunity for them to receive hands on Reiki. The plan is to roll out this out to other Montessori Schools in the UK.

As part of my dedication to Montessori Teaching, I sit on the National Council of the Montessori Schools Association as the London Regional Chair. I have hosted the Annual National Conference since its conception and have grown the attendance from 40 to over 900 teachers attending annually.

I am very proud to be the joint founder and trustee of the Kipungani Schools Trust, based in Kenya. The Trust’s 16 schools now have places for 14,000 children. The Trust currently employs 32 full-time primary school teachers and sponsors 100 children through secondary school. In addition, the Trust has achieved great social impact around the world, establishing a successful school for the disabled and has built two polytechnics in Adu and Marikebuni.

I hope my approach achieves an ideal balance between the academic, social and psychological development of the child and the adult. Whether it’s working in class with children, parents and teachers or teaching Reiki, my aim is to leave an imprint of care and creativity.

I am honoured to have been voted onto Council and I look forward to serving members of The Reiki Association over the coming years.

Luke Criasia - Council member

Luke CriasiaIt is not until Monday evening after I have left work and taken a short drive out of town that I can truly reflect on another glorious weekend spent with my Reiki "family" at the Reiki Association Annual Gathering.

As I write this I am lying on the ground in the middle of Woodhenge, listening to the birds and the gentle breeze, feeling very connected to my surroundings and the new council. When I arrived on Friday at Hothorpe Hall, I knew that something had been stirring in me all week but I did not think that I would be leaving as a member of council. This is the beauty of Reiki, when the energy moves you it is best not to resist but to trust it completely.

I always knew that I was very blessed to meet my Reiki master when I was young. When I was 20 I took my first degree with Milly Cain, I immediately realised how this was to change my life but maybe not in the ways I had expected. I was working in the construction industry, and growing up in a man’s world. In spite of this, or maybe because of, my feelings, intuition and sensitivity to this beautiful world around me was growing faster than my body and muscles. I started to spread the word about this healing practice and it didn't take long for friends and family to notice a change in me and eventually several of them became initiated themselves. I realise how lucky I am to have Reiki in my family but to be able to share a treatment with both your sisters is something special. My second degree followed shortly and I was deeply immersed in my new practice. As I was a good student I listened to my master and immediately joined the Reiki Association and on attending my first gathering I really began to understand what TRA was all about. Without this community, my journey would not have felt so supported.

Years have passed and Reiki has become as much a part of my life as brushing my teeth. Like the flow of energy around us, my experience with Reiki comes in waves, and over the last few years it has been integral to all my decisions and my future plans. I am now at a stage in my life where I believe I can be of great service to TRA and try to help others feel the warm connection that I have felt over the years. TRA is in a great space at the moment after all the hard work of previous councils and I want to help this continue. The world is at a new dawn and so is TRA, I feel in my heart that the time is perfect to spread the word and take us forward.

And to quote from my own notes from this Gathering weekend. "I am a person who is excited by every day and what it can bring!"

Marian Chilton - Council member

Marian ChiltonWe never really know where our paths will take us. When I attended this year's Reiki Gathering at Charney Manor I had no idea I would be standing for council. It was the pure energy of Reiki that that brought me to this place. Reiki's wisdom is far beyond my own capacity, I have learnt when it connects with my heart in such a strong way it is important to listen.

Reiki found me in 2002 at a time when I was struggling with chronic and debilitating back problems . I had never heard of Reiki before but picked up an advert for a Reiki 1 course at a Holistic Health Charity Fundraiser. Within 10 days I was on the course not really knowing anything about it but feeling it was right to be there. I was blessed to find the perfect teacher for me - Sue Davies (formerly Ashton-Green). I did Reiki 2 a year later with Sue and completed my mastership with her in 2008.

I have always been naturally drawn to caring for others and that is what I like to do. I've enjoyed careers in both youth and community work and counselling. I have also worked in schools and supported adults with acquired brain injuries and children with special needs. I have a particular interest in the field of loss and bereavement and for the last 10 years have volunteered at my local hospice as a bereavement support worker with children and adults.

I have lived in the same place for the last 27 years in beautiful Shropshire, and love being part of my local community. I am an active member of my neighbourhood church and help run a community youth group. It's Christian Aid week this week and as the rep in our area I have been busy out and about collecting and supporting other volunteers in that role. It is rewarding knowing that our small actions will change lives for the long term and bring help and hope to those in emergency situations. I get enthusiastic about finding different ways of fundraising for various projects throughout the year, and inspiring others to feel the same way.

I have only been a member of TRA since January 2013, but have attended all 3 Annual Gatherings since I joined. I have been struck on each occasion by the wonderful sense of community I have experienced. I know not everyone is able to come to the Gatherings, but I do hope through the various other events on offer and channels of communication available that I get to connect with many more of you personally over the course of time.

Grainne Warner - Council member

Grainne WarnerIt is only now, having being elected to the Council of the Reiki Association, that I am really absorbing the feeling of congruence this brings to my Reiki journey at this time and I am so grateful.

My Reiki journey started in 1997, the day after my eldest son was born. In the midst of my struggle with sudden motherhood, a friend came to visit me in hospital and gave me Reiki. Such a feeling of peace in the midst of so much anxiety! Reiki has been with me ever since, firstly through receiving treatments and then learning myself, supporting me in all aspects of my life.

My Reiki master is Tripuri Dunne, I was first initiated into Reiki in 2001, received Reiki II in 2002, was initiated as a Reiki master in 2006 and have been a member of the Association since the beginning. I’ve enjoyed gatherings when I could, my first being with Wanja Twan in Buckland Hall back in 2004. I’ve have been the company secretary for a number of years and am responsible for oversight of the annual accounts and Company House paperwork.

When the children were very young I left my full time role and worked part time as a mum, childminder, freelance accountant and Reiki practitioner, a harmonious mix. I was a founding parent at the St.Michael Steiner School in South West London and went on to become a governor at the children’s next state school, bringing some of Steiner’s principles to our new school’s playground - another blessing. This July, after twelve years, I step down from the school governing body to allow more space in my life for Reiki.

My current work as Finance Director of Pagefield Communications is supported by my spiritual practice of Reiki, as I work to bring corporate and spiritual worlds closer together e.g. I love to bless money before paying people (including the tax man) and send this money (energy) filled with love and gratitude out into the world! I currently serve on the Reiki Foundation International board, an international charity registered in the USA, where we are working to strengthen a movement of coming together in Reiki we call Reiki Home; fostering community and connection with love and mutual respect for the rich variety of lineages and forms in our global Reiki Family.

At the AGM I explained my desire to help strengthen community, connection and unity. The Association has community at it’s heart and the 25th birthday gathering was so full of love it was truly inspiring. The ups and downs of my life have been smoothed by my Reiki practice of daily self-treatment and living the principles and now is the time for me to give back more in gratitude for all the gifts I’ve received. I go ever deeper into the principles, especially earning my living honestly, giving my all in service to Reiki and in Mrs.Takata’s words, counting my blessings!

Julia Kempson - Council member

Julia KempsonReiki is so much a part of my life that it is hard to know where it all began. I am sure that spending 6 of my most formative years in the Far East ensured I would be open to a different way of thinking. I was also introduced to Eastern mysticism by enlightened parents, without it effecting my Christian beliefs.

I first heard about Reiki itself at a holistic festival called Quest, held annually at Newton Abbot racecourse. This was in 2001, where I listened to a talk outlining the principals and origins. It triggered something inside of me like a memory, and I felt as if was already known to me.

When welcoming and chatting to a new neighbour, a few months later, I discovered she was a Reiki Master who taught Reiki 1 and 2. Sue Pryke became my master for those levels starting in 2003. I became a Master myself in March 2006 with Angela Moorhouse in Glastonbury, an amazing and powerful attunement in Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki. In 2008 I took level 1&2 in Usui Sin Kai Reiki Jin Kei Do under Sandra Straw. I have been a member of TRA for many years and went to my first Gathering in 2007, where I first met Phyllis. Buckland Hall was fabulous!

I have retired now but in my previous life was a specialist Private Banking Manager looking after professional students and Graduates. I worked for the Bank for over 30 years. I was married for over 30 years too but now divorced but on good terms. I have 2 amazing daughters, both of whom have taken Reiki 1 and my younger daughter her Reiki 2 as well. They are both married and live away but we are close in spirit. I am the sole carer for my 91 year old Mother, sadly now in a Nursing home with vascular dementia. I also run an Airbnb as I have 2 spare rooms and live 5 minutes walk from the beach in Exmouth. It is wonderful to meet people as far apart as China and Tasmania . Children and animals are a joy too.

I hope to bring an approach that reflects my experiences and I look forward to my time on Council.

Bob Steele - Council member

Bob SteeleI am a 67 years young retired technical illustrator and graphic designer. I was born partially deaf and went to a school for the deaf until I was twelve. I was then one of first children to be integrated into main stream school - I wish I had had Reiki then! I went on to do A levels and attended Birmingham College of Art.

My first encounter with Reiki was in 2003 with Reiki Master Loretta Venus, my then girl friend. After a few treatments she gently encouraged me to take first degree and I was initiated by Rick Bockner in 2004. Reiki has been a constant in our lives and our relationship ever since. We exchange treatments on regular basis and have done many 4-day treatments, also attended lots of gatherings and events. In 2005 I was initiated into second degree by Phyllis Furumoto. Mind you Phyllis found me an interesting and challenging student who asked too many questions. She did give me my certificate at the end!

Loretta and I attended this gathering as a welcome break following some difficult family issues. Nothing could have been further from my mind than joining council. Loretta had been on council for the first four years of our relationship and our dear friend Milly Cain was to stand down at this gathering after three years. So I have a pretty good idea of what it involves. When Kate Jones asked those interested in standing for Council to stand up I sat there happily. Then as each of the three people who stood up and each began to make their short statement, I began to have this tingling in my chest. I decided to ignore it. My head was going -"no way! don't go there! what about my passion for sailing!" But my heart was going "BE HONEST, this is about Reiki." I put my hand up in confusion and after encouragement from Kate, I made my statement so here I am on Council!

I look forward to serving the community. I love the simplicity Reiki and the way it takes me on these unexpected journeys with all there twists and turns. Following the achievements of the previous Council I look forward to making a contribution and carrying on the good work.

Loretta and I live amongst the beautiful green hills and yellow ochre stones cottages in the North Cotswold where we have the allotment and sail our small yacht on the River Seven near Tewkesbury.

The Reiki Principles
Just for today do not worry,
Just for today do not anger,
Honour your parents, teachers and elders,
Earn your living honestly,
Show gratitude to every living thing.
Reiki
Reiki ('Ray-key') is Japanese for Universal Life Energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It was introduced into the Western World by one of his students, Hawayo Takata, who gave us the system of Reiki in which TRA is rooted, Usui Shiki Ryoho.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being.
There are many variations of Reiki systems now-a-days, but in essence Reiki treatments can help the body emotionally or spiritually. In accordance with advertising guidelines, it is not possible to list the wide range of conditions practitioners believe can be helped by Reiki so it is always good to talk to people who have benefited from Reiki in their lives. Reiki is a tradition that is open to any belief system.
The Reiki Association aims are to:
~ Encourage people to deepen their practice of the Art of Reiki.
~ Provide information about Reiki to members of the Association and the wider community.
~ Foster the Reiki community locally, nationally and internationally.
~ Encourage members to contribute to the decision making process of the Association.
~ Encourage professional standards of Reiki practice.
