Council of the Reiki Association

The composition of the Council of the Reiki Association usually changes each year as one or more members come to the end of their maximum allowed term on Council. Council members are normally elected at General Meetings held during gatherings and become directors of the company. Whilst reasonable expenses can be reimbursed, the positions themselves have no remuneration.
Council members are expected to attend in person several meetings each year. Locations for meetings are chosen by Council to best suit the majority of its members, and may last a couple of days thus requiring overnight stays. TRA business is otherwise dealt with by phone, sometimes including Skype, and much is done by email.

If you are interested in standing for Council these are the criteria:

  • be over 18 years of age
  • have been initiated into Reiki for a minimum of 2 years
  • at some point in time have been a member of TRA for at least 2 years
  • be initiated into Second Degree Reiki, or a Master
  • agree to abide by and actively support the Statement of Identity of The Reiki Association
  • have attended a previous TRA gathering
  • be prepared to make a short statement at the General Meeting outlining why they want the role and what they can offer to it
  • ensure circumstances do not exist which prevent directorship of a limited company

Marian Chilton - Council member

Marian ChiltonWe never really know where our paths will take us. When I attended this year's Reiki Gathering at Charney Manor I had no idea I would be standing for council. It was the pure energy of Reiki that that brought me to this place. Reiki's wisdom is far beyond my own capacity, I have learnt when it connects with my heart in such a strong way it is important to listen.

Reiki found me in 2002 at a time when I was struggling with chronic and debilitating back problems . I had never heard of Reiki before but picked up an advert for a Reiki 1 course at a Holistic Health Charity Fundraiser. Within 10 days I was on the course not really knowing anything about it but feeling it was right to be there. I was blessed to find the perfect teacher for me - Sue Davies (formerly Ashton-Green). I did Reiki 2 a year later with Sue and completed my mastership with her in 2008.

I have always been naturally drawn to caring for others and that is what I like to do. I've enjoyed careers in both youth and community work and counselling. I have also worked in schools and supported adults with acquired brain injuries and children with special needs. I have a particular interest in the field of loss and bereavement and for the last 10 years have volunteered at my local hospice as a bereavement support worker with children and adults.

I have lived in the same place for the last 27 years in beautiful Shropshire, and love being part of my local community. I am an active member of my neighbourhood church and help run a community youth group. It's Christian Aid week this week and as the rep in our area I have been busy out and about collecting and supporting other volunteers in that role. It is rewarding knowing that our small actions will change lives for the long term and bring help and hope to those in emergency situations. I get enthusiastic about finding different ways of fundraising for various projects throughout the year, and inspiring others to feel the same way.

I have only been a member of TRA since January 2013, but have attended all 3 Annual Gatherings since I joined. I have been struck on each occasion by the wonderful sense of community I have experienced. I know not everyone is able to come to the Gatherings, but I do hope through the various other events on offer and channels of communication available that I get to connect with many more of you personally over the course of time.

Grainne Warner - Council member

Grainne WarnerIt is only now, having being elected to the Council of the Reiki Association, that I am really absorbing the feeling of congruence this brings to my Reiki journey at this time and I am so grateful.

My Reiki journey started in 1997, the day after my eldest son was born. In the midst of my struggle with sudden motherhood, a friend came to visit me in hospital and gave me Reiki. Such a feeling of peace in the midst of so much anxiety! Reiki has been with me ever since, firstly through receiving treatments and then learning myself, supporting me in all aspects of my life.

My Reiki master is Tripuri Dunne, I was first initiated into Reiki in 2001, received Reiki II in 2002, was initiated as a Reiki master in 2006 and have been a member of the Association since the beginning. I’ve enjoyed gatherings when I could, my first being with Wanja Twan in Buckland Hall back in 2004. I’ve have been the company secretary for a number of years and am responsible for oversight of the annual accounts and Company House paperwork.

When the children were very young I left my full time role and worked part time as a mum, childminder, freelance accountant and Reiki practitioner, a harmonious mix. I was a founding parent at the St.Michael Steiner School in South West London and went on to become a governor at the children’s next state school, bringing some of Steiner’s principles to our new school’s playground - another blessing. This July, after twelve years, I step down from the school governing body to allow more space in my life for Reiki.

My current work as Finance Director of Pagefield Communications is supported by my spiritual practice of Reiki, as I work to bring corporate and spiritual worlds closer together e.g. I love to bless money before paying people (including the tax man) and send this money (energy) filled with love and gratitude out into the world! I currently serve on the Reiki Foundation International board, an international charity registered in the USA, where we are working to strengthen a movement of coming together in Reiki we call Reiki Home; fostering community and connection with love and mutual respect for the rich variety of lineages and forms in our global Reiki Family.

At the AGM I explained my desire to help strengthen community, connection and unity. The Association has community at it’s heart and the 25th birthday gathering was so full of love it was truly inspiring. The ups and downs of my life have been smoothed by my Reiki practice of daily self-treatment and living the principles and now is the time for me to give back more in gratitude for all the gifts I’ve received. I go ever deeper into the principles, especially earning my living honestly, giving my all in service to Reiki and in Mrs.Takata’s words, counting my blessings!

Janet Brown - Council member

Janet BrownJan Brown has been a Reiki Master in the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition since 1998. Jan met Reiki in 1995 in Vermont while on a skiing holiday where she took Reiki I with Penelope Jewell. She subsequently trained as a master with Penelope. She is currently part of the circle of service for the TRA, answering the general enquiry line.

Jan moved with her husband to Wadhurst in East Sussex in 2015, to be beside her grandchildren, but lived for most of her life in Scotland. She is a qualified Complementary Therapist and ran her own therapy clinic for 10 years in Scotland. She taught for many years in various parts of Scotland before taking time out to become an artist.

Jan has previously served on the Reiki Association council as well as several other committees. (Angus Open Studios and Angus Complementary Therapists)

Jan is a passionate organic gardener and has a love of standing stones, history and reading. She is also a peace pipe carrier and cat lover.

Annette Cass - Council member

Annette CassI attended my first Gathering the year that we planted a tree in honour of Marilyn Shields (2004) and I was blown away by the energy and beauty of the event. I have attended nearly all Gathering’s at Buckland since then. The return to this special place this April coincided with my return to the Association~ a mild curiosity about old friends and what was new, transformed into my unexpected calling to join the splendid folk on Council!

My Reiki Journey: I learnt Reiki I with Liz Lyden in Jan 2003 when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. After he died it was easy to self treat on a daily basis whilst grieving, and I soon realised that Reiki was the gift he left me along with the cat who is purring next to me as I write this. As soon as I could I went on to learn Reiki II and it was through Reiki that I met my husband John Cass when he was organising a master candidate training for Phyllis and they chose to use my place! My own master training consisted of 3 years with Phyllis and then 3years with Paul Mitchell who initiated me as a master in 2013.

I have worked on sub groups within the Association in the past– so have helped organise events and training but never on council before. It feels that it is my time.

Current Personal: John and I live in the amazing Wye Valley and if you are quick you could come stay with us as we are now seeking to move to a new home.

So what do I bring to Council?- life experiences- skills? I have had a wonderful eclectic work-life dance. It continues to be joy-filled whilst simultaneously sharing other people’s deeper life issues. After working in F.E. Colleges, then Mencap, I escaped to Snowdonia in 1990 to set up a mountaineering business with my partner and have been self employed ever since. Renovating 2 properties and finally marketing the later as Snowonia Retreat, I enjoyed providing places for personal retreats combined with treatments on site. John and I then ran various Reiki happenings and Events including for Phyllis and later Paul’s Silent Retreats. Other skills: working in voluntary counselling organisations, team building in the outdoors….I still prefer to be outdoors then anywhere else. If there is a theme it is always about helping people to bring out the best in themselves- challenging themselves, healing themselves. Working with Change.

I have found myself often in a places of innovation and change…. And the planet is certainly throwing us some clear messages that we need to be pro-active now in aiding planetary change. I hope to bring a fresh set of eyes and personal maturity in service to the Association.

Narkess Aralova - Council member

Narkess Aralova

Originally from Kazakhstan, a country I hold dearly and deeply in my heart, I was growing up in a household of two reiki masters-parents and got my first degree initiation in the middle of 90s at the age of 11. My first degree initiating masters, Anand and Chandira, were initiating hundreds of people in one big room willing to learn the magic called “reiki” and among that group was my extended family, cousins, aunties and numerous friends of my parents. Quite honestly, I struggle to remember life without reiki and back in my childhood the choice of having reiki was influenced by the choice made by my family. It is not until later in life I have grown into making a conscious choice and devotion to this practice.

Somehow my parents always knew I would not stay in Kazakhstan. When I was leaving my country at the age of 18 to study in Poland I asked my mother, a newly initiated master herself, to initiate me into second degree. I knew that I would like to be able treat from the distance but also be connected to my family this way. My destiny brought me to the UK during one summer holiday and somewhere deep inside I felt that I had to stay. While being a student in 2007, I decided to come to my ever first UK reiki gathering at Buckland Hall, which turned out to be the most meaningful place that played hugely important role in my life to come. Without knowing a single person in the association or another reiki practitioner, I have met this amazing community of people who welcomed me with an open heart, my reiki master Phyllis Lei Furumoto, with whom I have been training as a candidate for 10 years, and my fiancé - all during that same gathering in 2007. It may not be a coincidence that here I have stepped up as TRA Council member, exactly 10 years later. Coming back to Buckland Hall in 2017 was very symbolic, the place that held my first memories of the UK reiki community.

Professionally I work as a chartered secretary in big business in London and travel to Kazakhstan few times a year. I was lucky to have met my managers in business, who contributed a lot in my integration in the UK and taught me the trade of secretaryship, which I deeply appreciate and honour. Throughout the years I have learned how to balance professional and spiritual and am happy to use the skills I have acquired in both areas going forward.

My spiritual and life journey brought me around the world, but my destiny was to stay in the UK and I now begin to understand the reason. My strong roots of seven generations are far away in the land of nomads, however I found my spiritual family in the UK, which became my home away from home. Now that I have spent 21 years of my life with reiki, 10 years as a master candidate and soon to become reiki master, I feel an ever growing calling to serve my spiritual family and community. My journey has given me some amazing gifts, nourished me throughout my path and it feels like it is time for me to give back. The words from the last song during 2007 gathering are coming in my mind: “been travelling all day, been travelling all year, been travelling a lifetime to find my way home. Home is where the heart is”.

The Reiki Principles
Just for today do not worry,
Just for today do not anger,
Honour your parents, teachers and elders,
Earn your living honestly,
Show gratitude to every living thing.
Reiki ('Ray-key') is Japanese for Universal Life Energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It was introduced into the Western World by one of his students, Hawayo Takata, who gave us the system of Reiki in which TRA is rooted, Usui Shiki Ryoho.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being.
There are many variations of Reiki systems now-a-days, but in essence Reiki treatments can help the body emotionally or spiritually. In accordance with advertising guidelines, it is not possible to list the wide range of conditions practitioners believe can be helped by Reiki so it is always good to talk to people who have benefited from Reiki in their lives. Reiki is a tradition that is open to any belief system.
The Reiki Association aims are to:
~ Encourage people to deepen their practice of the Art of Reiki.
~ Provide information about Reiki to members of the Association and the wider community.
~ Foster the Reiki community locally, nationally and internationally.
~ Encourage members to contribute to the decision making process of the Association.
~ Encourage professional standards of Reiki practice.
